The Lake Beyond the Ridge

Notes from a few quiet days walking in the hills.

A narrow paved road with a guardrail curves through a green valley between steep grassy cliffs and a conical mountain peak under thick gray overcast clouds, with low mist over the upper right ridge.

The road kept winding through the cliffs after the fog settled in. Cloud sat low on the ridge, slow to lift. I didn't see another vehicle the whole way.

Voices carried across the plateau, quiet against all that stone. The water held its color all the way to the horizon. I sat near the edge longer than I meant to.

Before the Sun

The valley was still filling with fog when we set out, the air dense and pale. We walked before sunrise to beat the heat, following a trail that would only get harder once the day warmed. I remember the quiet more than the view — the muffled sound of our footsteps, the way the fog held the light and gave it back slowly.

A snow-covered high-altitude campsite features a yellow and grey dome tent and a smaller second tent, set against snow-laden mountain peaks with a low stacked-stone wall running across the foreground.

We woke to snow on the tent. The yellow fabric bore the letters T.T. 201, the rest buried under drifts. Behind us the peaks held their shape against a pale sky.

After the Ridge

The lake appeared suddenly after the ridge—one moment the path climbed upward, the next there was water, filling the valley below. I had not expected it, though I could not say, later, what I had expected instead.

The wind off the surface was colder than the air on the hillside. No one else was around. I sat on a stone near the edge and watched the small ripples move across the shallows, going nowhere in particular.

It was the kind of place you do not describe afterward, because there is nothing to tell except that you were there, and that the wind kept coming.

Last morning. I packed slowly, finding small reasons to delay the road home.
A tall waterfall descends a rocky cliff into a dark plunge pool, feeding a narrow stream that winds through a steep, moss-covered valley surrounded by dense coniferous forest under an overcast sky.
Day 3 — July 16

Morning fog still held in the upper ridges when we came over the rise. The falls were louder than I expected, and the wind off the pool was cold. I sat on a fallen log near the stream for a long time, not ready to move on.

A Long Road

The driver had been quiet for hours, the kilometers ticking off in that particular silence that settles over a long drive. When he finally pulled over and said the noodles here were worth the stop, I took it as more than a suggestion.

The place was small, and the order came without hesitation — the confidence of a man who knew exactly what he was doing. I sat and waited, and for a few minutes the road outside stopped mattering.

We did not say much after that. Sometimes the best recommendations come without explanation.

The exposure ran longer than I expected. I tried to stand still.
A large white stone castle with multiple towers and a tall central spire sits atop a forested ridge, with a valley of green fields, scattered settlements, and distant mountains visible behind it.
Day 4 — July 17
Jul 17 · 08:00
I stopped here longer than I meant to. The castle sat above the forest with the whole valley laid out behind it — fields, a thread of water, rooftops tucked into the folds of the hills. Made the last morning hard to start packing for.

The Last Morning

The last morning moved at the pace of reluctance. I packed slowly, each item placed with more attention than the task required, as though careful hands could lengthen what was already ending. The bag seemed to understand what I was not yet ready to say.

I did not want to leave. That was the whole of it — not a thought but a sensation, the body's quiet resistance to motion, to doors, to the moment when a place you have lived in briefly becomes a place you have left.

I let the suitcase sit half-closed on the bed. The morning passed around me, unhurried, and I let it.

I took a short video more to remember the quiet than the view itself. The lake lay flat, the bridge lights glowed faintly, and I could not decide whether it was sunrise or sunset.
A figure with arms outstretched faces a tall waterfall from a pebbled shoreline, with a full rainbow arcing across the mist in warm golden light.
Jul 17 · 20:15
I walked right to the base and raised my arms into the spray. The rainbow held longer than I expected, arcing down to the stones on either side.
